◆ Budapest — Must-See Highlights · 4 Days
01
Fisherman's Bastion — at dawn
The Neo-Romanesque terraces overlooking the Danube and Parliament are one of the great views in Europe. Crowds arrive by 9am; go at sunrise and you'll have it almost to yourself. 20 minutes at 7am beats an hour at noon.
02
Hungarian Parliament — exterior at dusk
View it from the Pest embankment as the lights come on over the Danube — one of the great architectural moments in Europe. Interior tours are available if timing allows; the lobby is spectacular.
03
Great Market Hall (Nagy Vásárcsarnok)
The 1897 iron-and-Zsolnay-tile market hall is architecturally extraordinary. Go for the structure as much as the stalls — paprika, salami, folk ceramics, and the best langos in the city on the upper level.
04
Dohány Street Synagogue
The largest synagogue in Europe and genuinely moving. The Moorish Revival interior and the memorial garden out back both earn their place. Allow an hour and book tickets in advance to avoid queuing.
05
House of Terror (Terror Háza)
One of the best history museums in Europe — unflinching documentation of Nazi and Soviet occupation housed in the actual building used by both regimes. Not easy, but essential. Budget 90 minutes minimum.
06
Castle Hill & Matthias Church
The whole Buda Castle district rewards an afternoon on foot. Matthias Church is the anchor — the neo-Gothic exterior with its Zsolnay diamond-tile roof is unlike anything else in the city.
◆ Ruin Bars
01
Szimpla Kert — Kazinczy u. 14
The original ruin bar and still the definitive version. Multiple rooms, layered decor, genuinely eclectic crowd. Busy by nature — go mid-week for more breathing room. Worth doing regardless; weekend nights can feel like a parade. The experience is real even when the crowd isn't all local.
02
Ellátó Kert — Kazinczy u. 48
Mellower than Szimpla, better for conversation. Outdoor courtyard is ideal in summer. More local crowd, less Instagram-bait. A strong all-around pick for a relaxed ruin bar evening. Verify before relying on it: sources conflict on current status — some report a 2019 closure, while other listings show recent activity. Confirm it's open before building an evening around it.
03
Instant / Fogas — VII District
Massive multi-room club complex. Not a drink-after-dinner spot — this is the 1am option if the night goes long. Skip it early.
Anker't — Tourist Trap
Marketed as a ruin bar but overwhelmingly tourist-facing. Nothing distinctive; there's no reason to choose it over Szimpla or Ellátó Kert. Reportedly closed since 2020 in any case — no official site remains, only the Facebook page above.
◆ Cocktail Bars
01
Boutiq Bar — Paulay Ede u. 5
Intimate, award-winning cocktail bar five minutes from Café Kör via Paulay Ede — the most logical first stop after the July 18 dinner. Among the most consistent bars in Budapest. Reserve in advance.
02
Tasting Table — Múzeum krt. 41
One of the best cocktail bars in Budapest. Serious bartenders, seasonal menus, no pretension. Requires a reservation. Top choice if cocktails are the priority and you don't mind the short cab.
03
High Note SkyBar — Aria Hotel, V. District △ Lookout
Rooftop bar with an unobstructed view of St. Stephen's Basilica. Pricey, but the setting earns it for one drink. Best at sunset; works equally well for a late round.
04
Leo Rooftop Sky Bar — Hotel Clark Budapest, Clark Ádám tér 1, Buda △ Lookout ✓ Booked July 18 & 19
8th-floor rooftop at the foot of the Chain Bridge on the Buda side. The view takes in the Chain Bridge, the Danube, downtown Pest, the Citadel, and Buda Castle all at once — one of the most complete panoramas of Budapest available from any bar. Reservations required (2-hour limit). The Leo Bistro on the ground floor has the same Chain Bridge orientation if you want a full meal instead. Confirmed via OpenTable: Sat July 18, 10:00 PM (4) and Sun July 19, 10:00 PM (3).
05
White Raven Skybar & Lounge — Hilton Budapest, Castle District △ Lookout
The highest rooftop bar in Budapest and the only Lookout on Castle Hill — the terrace looks down over Fisherman's Bastion and across the Danube to Parliament. Smart casual dress code (no sportswear or trainers). Reserve online in advance; tables seat up to 6 with a two-hour limit.
⚠ Significant timing constraint: last call is 8:30 PM for food and 9:30 PM for drinks. This is a sunset stop, not a late-night option — with sunset around 8:35 PM in late July and dinners booked 7:00–8:30 most nights, it only works as a pre-dinner golden-hour drink. For a late round after dinner, use Leo Rooftop or High Note instead (both open to midnight).
◆ Wine & Spirits
01
DOBLO — Dob u. 20
Hungarian natural wine bar in the heart of the Jewish Quarter. Excellent selection, unpretentious, genuinely local. Easy walk from both Café Kör and Borkonyha — works well as a low-key nightcap stop.
02
DiVino Borbar — Szent István tér
Hungarian wine-forward bar with a terrace on the Basilica square. Solid staff knowledge. Short cab from Café Kör or Borkonyha; good all-around option for wine in the V. District.
⚠ Tourist Traps — Avoid
Bars near the Central Market Hall — Overpriced and catering exclusively to tour groups. Nothing redeems them.

Any "ruin bar" with a sandwich board in English and laminated cocktail photos outside — Pale imitation at inflated prices. Skip without guilt.

Gozsdu Udvar (the long courtyard passage) — Pleasant to walk through; every bar lining it is generic and overpriced. Do not sit down here.
◆ Recommended Sequence — After Café Kör, July 18
LEO Rooftop is now booked at 10:00 PM — plan a short cab across the Chain Bridge after dinner. If the group wants a stop en route, Boutiq Bar is a five-minute walk from Café Kör via Paulay Ede. Szimpla Kert and Ellátó Kert are a ten-minute walk east into the VII District for another night; Tasting Table and DiVino require a short cab but are worth building in on a different evening.
◆ Top 5 Bakeries
01
Artizán — Hold utca 3, District V
The benchmark for Budapest's craft baking movement. Gergő Fekete trained across Western Europe before opening Artizán, and it shows — naturally leavened sourdough and laminated morning pastries with a consistency that's rare in a city still dominated by bland bakery chains. A short walk from Parliament; worth building into a morning.
02
Butter Brothers — Lónyay utca 22, District IX
Hidden one street behind the pedestrian Ráday utca in the university quarter, and the standard-bearer since 2012. The crowd is genuinely local — Corvinus students and Ferencváros residents rather than tour groups. Croissants, cinnamon rolls, and túrós táska (cottage cheese pastry) are the draw.
03
Pékműhely Bartók — Bartók Béla út 15/b, District XI · Buda
No signboard, no design pretension, just excellent bread. The philosophy is stated plainly: flour, water, salt, sourdough, and a pinch of love. The kakós csiga (chocolate roll) is the reason regulars come back daily.
04
Három Tarka Macska — Pozsonyi út 41, Újlipótváros
A polished neighborhood bakery in the well-heeled district north of Parliament. French-technique breads and pastries with a loyal residential following — the kind of place locals build a Saturday morning around, not a stop on a bus tour.
05
Arán — Wesselényi utca, Jewish Quarter · District VII
Run by Kinga and Attila Pécsi, who spent a decade baking in Ireland before returning to Budapest. Long-fermented rustic loaves and standout cinnamon rolls in a cozy, unfussy room in the heart of the Jewish Quarter — a favorite with locals and visitors alike.
◆ Must-Try Hungarian Pastries
01
Kürtőskalács — Chimney Cake
Sweet yeasted dough wrapped around a spit and rotated over an open flame until the sugar coating caramelizes into a crackling shell. Crisp outside, soft and fluffy within. Buy it fresh and warm from a street vendor rather than a packaged version — the caramelized crust doesn't hold.
02
Dobos Torte
Six layers of sponge cake and five of chocolate buttercream, finished with a shell of caramelized sugar. Invented in Budapest in the 1880s by pastry chef József Dobos, designed to outlast other cakes of the era. Still the city's signature cake — worth ordering a slice at a proper cukrászda (patisserie) rather than a hotel dessert cart.
03
Rétes — Strudel
Hungary's answer to baklava, adapted during the centuries of Ottoman occupation. Paper-thin pastry wrapped around apple, sour cherry, poppy seed, or cottage cheese filling. Túrós rétes (cottage cheese strudel) is the local favorite and less commonly found outside Hungary than the apple version.
04
Pogácsa
A savory scone dating to medieval Hungary, eaten as a snack rather than a dessert. Order tepertős (pork cracklings) for the classic version or sajtos (cheese) for something milder — both turn up at bakeries and market stalls alike, including the upper level of the Great Market Hall.
05
Somlói Galuska
A trifle-style dessert: layers of sponge cake soaked in rum, walnuts, chocolate sauce, and whipped cream. Named for the Somló wine region but has nothing to do with wine — it's the standard order when nothing else on a Budapest dessert menu looks tempting enough.
The Luleå wedding was cancelled, so this leg was rebuilt as a Croatia coastal stop — Hvar Island, then Split — before flying on to Stockholm via SAS. ◆ Barbershop Comparison — Split
01
Ritual Barbershop — Ul. Ruđera Boškovića 16, Split · 4.9★ (815 reviews)
Very high review volume with consistent quality across many barbers, known for precise fades and beard work, takes walk-ins even when booked up. Popular enough to get busy — book ahead for a specific barber (e.g. Ante, the owner).
02
Leekarija Barbershop — Ul. Drage Ivaniševića 39, Split · 5.0★ (461 reviews)
Perfect rating across a large review base, 1930s-Chicago-style vibe with modern technique, barber-owned with strong repeat clientele. Appointment only, booked through the Fresha app; sits in Sućidar, a short ride from the old town.
03
Barbershop Classic — Zadarska ul. 2, 21000, Split · City Center location · 4.7★ (60 reviews) ✓ Confirmed — this is where we went
Confirmed: we got haircuts here — the City Center location (Zadarska ul. 2), not the Lovret branch. Modern space with several experienced barbers on staff, consistent praise for friendliness and value.
04
Barber Shop Fashion — Walk-in — Ul. Kraj Svete Marije 5, Split · 4.7★ (56 reviews)
True walk-in model, no booking needed, praised for clean fades and atmosphere, open late most nights (until 10pm). Smaller review base and no dedicated website — phone or in person only.
05
Studio Vibe (caution) — Vrboran ul. 27, Split · 4.9★ (235 reviews)
High overall rating and some reviewers describe a strong long-term relationship with the owner, Tomo. But several detailed, recent negative reviews describe rushed cuts and poor communication, and one review flags a mismatched address on Google — wouldn't put this one at the top of the list despite the score.
